I've been a commecial photographer since 1980 and have hauled my gear around in large, cumbersome shoulder bags. Never thought twice about shoulder bags as they were a necessary evil of the profession. Since paring equipment down to two digital bodies and two Canon L series zooms;a 100-400 and 17-40 I no longer needed a large shoulder bag. While perusing Amazon for a smaller shoulder bag I came across the Lowe Pro backpacks. With a trip to Montreal and the Canadian Grand Prix coming in June I ordered the 400 AW based on positive Amazon reviews. It was vastly different than a shoulder bag which had become akin to an annoying but helpful relative especially travelling. So the bag arrived week before we left for Montreal, I loaded it up with a slight modicum of doubt [old habits die hard], made easy adustments to the straps for fit and did a few morning "trial" walks with the pack. Well I should have made this change about a decade or more ago! The backpack is nothing short of perfect, my minimalist gear fits easily allowing the lenses to be mounted at all times on the bodies; interior divides can be arranged easily in a myriad of ways. Ergonomically the pack sits centered and balanced on the back, is padded against contours on your back and the flip feature works like a charm. I'm 6'3" tall and the shoulder straps allowed more than enough adjustment so the pack sits comfortably against the back. We spent the entire weekend traveling on the Metro from downtown to the track and walked the entire track all three days. Not once did I feel any back strain nor was it difficult to access the bag even when shoulder to shoulder crammed into grandstands. It rained Fri and Sat. and the hidden fold out poncho easily and tightly covered the entire pack, nothing got wet, once back in the hotel the poncho dried quickly and was easily stuffed back into it's marsupial like pouch on the bottom. All straps, connectors and latches are robust yet easy to adjust and operate. There are small zip and velcro slots for shutter release cables, cell phone, extra cards, few accessories, pads, pens and an I Pad will fit in the zip slot on the back. The pack will not fit under an airline seat but literally falls into the overhead bin, a handle on top is perfect for overhead tossing and adjustments.I could not be more pleased with the Lowepro 400 AW!!! It has changed traveling with camera gear good bye and good riddance shoulder bag!!! No more switching back and forth from fatigued shoulders, snagging seats down an airplane aisle or turning around quickly and nailing some poor unsuspecting bystander as the shoulder bag swung around. It's been my experience in photography the best gear I've bought over the years is the stuff I never once think about after using it a few times. This took a day or so to assimilate, bring a huge smile to my face and no doubt stop the onslaught of bursitus! Oh another plus is I take this backpack along on daily couple three mile walks to add a little more "resistance" to the exercise regimen. I could not recommend this fine backpack any higher; the Lowepro 400AW will NOT disappoint!RegardsNA
